Short Cuts - Jennifer Sky "Queen of the Tokyo Ballroom"

by David Gutowski (feat. Jennifer Sky)

In her small feature on largehearted boy, in which she describes how one song (Seal's "Crazy") relates to her newly published book Queen of the Tokyo Ballroom, Jennifer Sky summarizes the story whilst also drawing connections between it and the song. I personally found the relationship between the two rather obvious - like, yeah, your life was crazy when you were 15, so of course you'll pick a song that illustrates that.

At first I did not realize that Queen of the Tokyo Ballroom was written about Sky herself, so when I was reading her own words I thought she was subtly rambling on about her past while throwing in some bits relating to "Crazy." And I kind of sat there like, "Wow, can I get something about the book already?" It was not through any use of periodic structure that I realized the correlation between Sky's own timeline and her story's plot, however. Rather, I had to dig deeper and do some research for myself, looking the book up on Amazon. I believe that such is the point behind these posts of Gutowski's: by enabling fresh pop culture icons to advertise themselves and show knowledge of their craft in a paragraph or less, he subliminally spurs readers of largehearted boy to look into these works. It's a great idea, very generous.
