Columnist Project #4

Shorties (Elle interviews author Chimamanda Ngzoi Adiche)
by David Gutowski

Gutowski posts only a short portion of Elle's interview with African-American author Chimamanda Adiche, in which she is asked how and why she writes. It is an interesting interview,  and the way Chimamanda phrases her answers is quite eloquent - as it should be, considering her profession. The most interesting portion of her interview is when she explains why she writes fiction. She says,"It is important to humanize history; fiction can help us remember. A lot of books I've read have been better than textbooks," which is an intriguing and beautiful outlook on the craft. I personally do not write as much historical fiction as fantasy, but I can easily see how an artistic take on the past can teach a lot more than a hulking book - especially where kids are involved, for example. Even more so when the author does their research.

On an unrelated note, I think the most grabbing part of this interview is the headline: "Meet Beyonce's Favorite Novelist." In a world where everyone wants a taste of celebrity life, why wouldn't you want to read about someone whose work is popular with such a big star as Beyoncé?
