13 Pics that Changed the World: Einstein w/ his tongue out
Photographer: Arthur Sasse
This picture changed the world in the sense that it shed a new light on Einstein, and geniuses everywhere, really. Often times the intelligent are remembered only for their smarts, described as dull when it comes to other social aspects. However, when this picture was taken, Einstein showed off his humorous side and gave us a glimpse into his personality in addition to his contributions to science and mathematics. I think it appeals to pathos because it's a humorous picture, and it almost gives hope to those whose intelligence dictates their position in society. The composition puts his bright face into focus, drawing attention to his expression and, consequently, the mood of the photo. According to the Sontag factor, this image IS comprehensible without background, because everybody knows who Albert Einstein is. They can understand the importance of the massive tongue and the smiling eyes without knowing that the photograph was taken on his birthday, when he was stuck working rather than relaxing.
